Accommodations

Some notes from Noel Treanor about accommodations for our gathering with additional information from Mary Cadden

In preparation for the 2022 Gathering in Monaghan, here is my own guide to accommodation in Monaghan. I’m not commenting on the standard or cost; as a resident of Monaghan, I have never had to book a room. All I can say is how proximate such accommodations are to the Gathering. If I have left any out, it is because either I don’t know about them, or I think they are too far away.

It is anticipated that the main hub of the Gathering will be Monaghan Town. If you do not drive, or do not wish to drive, and do not wish to use a taxi service, you would be best basing yourself in Monaghan Town.

There are three hotels in Monaghan town; the Westenra is in the centre of town and The Four Seasons and the Hillgrove are both at the edge of town, but Monaghan isn’t very big, so they are both walking distance. Just note that Monaghan is hilly, so there will be gradients to deal with. There is also a guesthouse, Ashleigh House, and this also is in the centre of town. The Glendale Bed and Breakfast is about a mile/mile and a half from the centre of town, as is the Meadows B&B.

For those of you that are prepared to drive, there are many more options to consider, all within a reasonable distance of the town.

There is a greater selection of guesthouses and bed and breakfasts out of town, again if you are prepared to drive.

Grove Lodge B&B, Monaghan

Laneside Self Catering, Killycrum, Castleblaney

Some of these locations are in villages, some are in the countryside, so be sure you know what sort of nearby amenities you would prioritise for your group when making your choice. As you are reading this on a website, I anticipate you know how to use a search engine, so looking up potential accommodation shouldn’t be beyond your ken.

There are direct bus links to the town from Dublin Airport, and also bus links from Belfast Airport, though this will require changes. Timetables may be accessed at www.buseireann.ie and www.translink.co.uk for the Republic and Northern Ireland respectively. All accommodation are of varying prices and ratings, you can do your own research on this. If you book through a private provider, such as Airbnb, be sure that you know exactly where the accommodation is. If you’re not sure, just ask us.

I have also confined myself to locations in Co Monaghan; there are other options, near enough to Monaghan town, mostly in Co Armagh in Northern Ireland. If you plan to book somewhere, but you are not sure, contact us.

Looking forward to seeing you in June 2022

  1. Mary and I stayed at the Hillside and we were quite pleased. Their rooms were comfortable and quiet and their breakfast was high quality and generous (buffet). We parked for the whole time we were there, and walked about 15 minutes downhill to the town center. Unfortunately the return trip was uphill! When returning from a tour, I suggest you let the bus driver drop you at the street. Exiting the lot was very tight for the bus.
