About Us

Brief History

The Treinfhir Clan is a group connected through the various versions of the surname Mac Threinfhir, be that Traynor, Treanor, Trenor, Trainor, McCreanor or the many variations thereof. The evidence shows that the name itself originated on the southern and eastern slopes of Slieve Beagh in county Monaghan but has spread to other parts of Ireland and the rest of the world.

The Treinfhir Project was initiated by Ted Trainer of Kennebunk, Maine on finding out he was from somewhere bigger than Kennebunk.

But it was hijacked by Noel Treanor (Dublin) in 2018 by a man so proud of his County he refuses to live there and spoil it. In this he was supported by another man, a Wanderer, on whose accent the sun never set. John and Margaret Yankee Treanor continue to facilitate meetings and events at their cottage in Drumdart, nestled among the Monaghan hills.

As well as biennial clan gatherings, we run various projects, including a book project (click here) a music project and online ceilis, three or four each year. We also act as a resource for persons wishing to research their own Treinfhir genealogy. Where persons come to visit Ireland, and Monaghan in particular, we make every effort to meet and guide such victims to places that may be of interest, graveyards a speciality.

The Treinfhir Clan is a constituted and voluntary membership organisation, registered as a not-for-profit entity in the Republic of Ireland. Membership is by biennial subscription, and general members meetings are held on a biennial basis also. It is not obligatory to be a member to visit the website or participate on our Facebook page, but voting rights are restricted to fully paid-up members.
