We have found the best route for us is between Boston and Dublin. We have had good luck on Aer Lingus. We like the outbound flight that departs Boston at 9:30pm and arrives Dublin at 8:30am. On the return, we choose the flight that leaves Dublin at about 11:30am and arrives in Boston about 2pm. We also have done Boston to Dublin and Shannon back to Boston. Either way, the cost is reasonable; I highly recommend either route. A final thought: we don’t do car rentals, opting to travel by bus instead. Bus Eireann goes in and out of Dublin often. The cost for this is reasonable too; every bus has excellent wifi, and in Monaghan you can easily walk from the bus station to The Diamond. You can get a bus from Dublin Airport or from the Busaras in Dublin proper.

Leslie and I leave Boston on June 6 on Air Lingus 134 to Shannon, arriving early on Tuesday morning. We love coming to Shannon as it is quiet, rural and easy. We will rent a car and motor to The Abbey in Roscommon – the site of the Kelly kingdom, which our Macartan left to follow St. Patrick. On Wednesday we meander over to Monaghan. After the Gathering we will drive to
Doolin and hang out there for several days to spend time in the Aran Islands, the Burren and Cliffs of Moher. On previous trips to Monaghan we have stayed in Dublin, hung out on Achill Island, driven through NI and Donegal, and meán de Red thrí SW Ireland. All these trips have been memorable – the more so as we delve into Celtic and Irish history and visit interesting sites, often in out of the way places, that we have read about. We then get back to Shannon Airport the night before our early morning return flight to Boston.
We made all our reservations last Fall – optimists that we are. Renting a car is tricky if you are over 70 but this will be our fourth such experience and I love driving on the country roads. We do not need the car during the Gathering but the Westenra hotel parking lot is free and we have always used our car during our visits to Monaghan.
