2022 Gathering, set for 9th – 12th June 2022

The Mournes, South Down

The TRNR Gathering this year will run for four days and nights starting on Thursday 9th June and finishing on Sunday 12th in the Evening with an American Wake.

We are expecting up to 200 overseas visitors but already we understand the Westenra hotel is fully booked up! There are others on our Accommodation page.

We have a diverse set of tours and events around the TRNR heartlands of County Monaghan and South Down.

On Friday we will be taking a coachload or two to Newry, South Down (where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea), a ferry crossing to Carlingford (where key events of the Tain Bo Cuailnge occurred).

The main tours on Saturday will be one to North Monaghan and one to South.

The former including the haunted Errigal Churchyard, the ancient St. Patrick’s Chair and Well and Bragan mountain which was one of few places of refuge in the Famine.
The latter will include Inniskeen, the homeplace of the renown Monaghan poet Patrick Kavanagh*, the Workhouse in Carrickmacross and the Lace-making centre.

On Sunday evening we will have an American Wake to say goodbye to all our cousins.  This is will be a three-hankie finale to the Gathering, don’t miss it.  WFH on the Monday!

There will be an informal Ceildh on Friday night, start practicing now; spoons, singing, poetry. Though we all reserve the right to go to the bar if you take too long.

There will be nature walks on the Bragan Mountain (barefoot if you haven’t any boots), a very, very early Dawn Chorus, the Gothic Bess Mount Park and the homeplace of Drumdart.

There are e-cycle rides around Glaslough, tours of Monaghan Town, of Clones, of the Cathedral, plus talks on what we know about our DNA, searching your genealogy, our history.
