Nicknames

There were once so many people in Co. Monaghan with the surname Treanor, and they shared a few very popular forenames.  This resulted in multiple people with the same name living within the same small area.  A local custom is to give families nicknames.  A nickname may be based on profession, father’s name, townland of origin, hair color, stature, mother’s family surname or something else entirely.  It may be used to identify a lineage for many generations or it may evolve over the generations.  Often, if a family member emigrated from this area of Ireland, the nickname was lost, because there weren’t so many Treanors in the new land, and so there was less need to distinguish many same-named people from each other.

Here is a list of Treinfhir nicknames we have so far. This table will be updated when we have more information. Please leave a comment if you are able to furnish additional background information on the origins of any of the names, or email your humble webmeister at the envelope link below.

  1. This is awesome! Big THANKS for your initiative and tenacity and research. My 100 year young dad is full of nicknames in Emyvale. I’ll print this list and see if we can add anything of substance.
