Welcome to the lobby! We have many ways for you to meet (for free!) with your family, across the street or across the pond. You can meet with family and friends at the Westenra, The Four Seasons, or The Ashley House Rooms, just by clicking on the room and entering username and password as described below. Treanor’s Bar is even easier: no username or password. Meeting is easier than calling, especially for international.
The first time you use this service, you will need to give permission to use the video and audio on your device. If you are on a phone, you can but you do not need to download the app. You may launch in the browser. It works just as well. Once you are in, you can invite others. People can join you without entering a user and password. The first person is the moderator. You can add a password or turn on Lobby Mode (where people can only enter after you let them in) by selecting the shield. This keeps your meeting private.
A comment regarding google meet: Please contact the site admin if you would like to organize a meeting. I am happy to schedule a meeting and hand it over to you. Your meeting must be less than 150 participants and less than 24 hours long.
Here are some technical details if your video freezes often or audio is choppy. Firstly, test your speed to see if that’s the problem. You can do that by pointing your browser to https://www.speedtest.net , or any speed-test site. You should see numbers in both directions that are bigger than 1.5 Mbps. If you do not, try the steps below.
- To decrease your need for high speed, choose the three dots and find “video quality” near the top. Standard seems to be just as clear as high definition. Lower definitions do not need as good of a connection. If you have to, choose “Low bandwidth” to turn your screen off. This does not turn off your camera. You can start/stop your camera using the camera icon near the bottom of the screen.
- Don’t blur the background (that’s a setting you get to with the three dots). Have a stationary background.
- Stop other activity that could be using your connection, such as other PCs, your smart TV or phone.
- Try to improve your connection. If your wi-fi router is obstructed or far away, your connection to it could be weak. Try to move closer, put your router in an open space to improve line-of-sight, or, if you can, connect directly using an Ethernet cable. You will spend around €6.6 ($8 US) for a 10m cable.
- If your device is more than around eight years old or has modest specifications, especially if you also have trouble on other platforms, consider an upgrade.
- Rebooting your device may help.
To get your best quality sound, after you have a good connection, you can buy a dedicated microphone. For best picture quality, have a good light placed behind the camera to shine on you. Incandescent lamps should be pointed at the ceiling to diffuse the light, if possible.

Hey Michael – can we add The Flying Pig as a room? We gotta have a pub don’t we, in case we want to carouse??
Thanks Charlie. I also found Treanor’s Bar, which allows us to maintain social distancing should there be too many of us in one place
