Using DNA to make connections and research your history
June 2024
Getting started:
*Take a DNA test at Ancestry.com.
If your Irish Treinfhir-ancestry parent is available, test them instead of you.
Use your name, not an anonymous pseudonym.
Complete your Ancestry profile with at least a photo, your age range, and your home area.
*Start building your family tree on Ancestry, add what you know.
Note: Living people are never publicly visible.
*Download your Ancestry DNA test result to GEDmatch. (no cost)
Your test result looks like a bunch of letters and numbers.
Once in GEDmatch, apply for the Treinfhir Ancestor Project.
*Add names to your family tree at GEDmatch (or a GEDcom file).
Next steps:
Use your same downloaded Ancestry DNA test result. Upload it to MyHeritage (no cost).
Upload your DNA test result to FamilyTreeDNA (no cost).
Apply to be in the Treinfhir project at FTDNA.
Specialized testing (patrilineal line and matrilineal line):
Males born Treinfhir can take a BigY test at FamilyTreeDNA, which helps us understand the historic connections of Treinfhir-surname families over many generations.
Apply to be in the Treinfhir Project at FTDNA.
Anyone, men and women, who have Treinfhir on their direct matrilineal line are encouraged to take an mtDNA test at FamilyTreeDNA, which helps us map the tree of womankind, can help confirm sisters, can distinguish children between two wives of a given man, and helps us understand historic connections of matrilineal line.
Apply to be in the Treinfhir Project at FTDNA.
